Man and van in Loughborough

The smaller end — a single room, a marketplace collection, a first flat, or one heavy thing that will not go in a car. Two people and a van, booked by the job.

Plenty of what gets asked for here is smaller than a house move: a room going across town, a first flat being furnished, a fridge-freezer that needs two people and a tail lift. Man and van covers it — same crews, same blankets, smaller vehicle, shorter day.

What it suits

  • Single rooms and first flats inside LE11 and LE12
  • Student rooms at the start and end of term
  • Moves out to Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and across the county
  • One awkward item: a sofa, a fridge-freezer, an upright piano, a workbench
  • Collections from warehouses, showrooms and marketplace sellers
  • Clearing a storage unit into a new address

What it does not suit

A well-filled one-bed is about the ceiling. Beyond that you are paying for two trips and a long afternoon, which is more than a house removal would have cost and takes longer. Describe the load honestly and we will tell you which side of the line you are on.

The awkward addresses

Small loads come out of the hardest buildings more often than large ones. Terraces with a staircase that turns at the bottom. Flats above shops on a busy pavement. Shared student houses where the front door belongs to five people.

So we ask the same short list every time: which floor, is there a lift, how wide is the stairwell turn, and where can the van legally stand. Two minutes at the booking stage prevents nearly every problem on the day.

Travel, priced honestly

On a small job travel is a bigger share of the total than it is on a full house. Inside the town it barely registers; a collection in Leicester with a delivery in Nottingham is closer to a day's work. We say so when quoting rather than absorbing it and regretting it.

Booking

Both addresses, a list or photo of what is going, and the floor at each end. Weekends, month-ends and term-end weeks go first. Where we work is on areas we cover.

Worth asking

Small-move questions

One person or two?

Two, on anything with furniture in it. One and a van is fine for cartons and nothing else. A sofa down a narrow terrace staircase is not a one-person job and saying otherwise is how furniture and people get damaged.

Do you carry, or just drive?

Carry — that is the job. If you genuinely only want a vehicle and a driver while you do the lifting, say so and we will price it that way, but it is not what most people mean.

Can you collect something I bought online?

Regularly. Send both addresses and a photograph of the item. The photo matters: if it will not clear your doorway we would rather know before the van sets off than on the pavement.

Do you go outside Loughborough?

Yes — Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and across the county routinely. On a small job the travel is a larger share of the total than on a house move, so we price it honestly rather than absorbing it.

When does it stop being the cheap option?

Around a well-filled one-bed. Past that it becomes two trips and a long day, which costs more than a proper removal and takes longer. We will tell you when you have crossed that line.

Next step

Got a small move on?

Two addresses, the floor at each end, and a rough list or a photo. We will tell you what it needs and what it costs.
