Italy draws a particular kind of move: rarely a wholesale relocation to a coastal development, far more often somebody who has bought one specific house in one specific place and is moving with things they mind about.
Plan the arrival first
On most routes you plan the journey and deal with the delivery. On Italy it pays to work backwards, because two constraints at the far end determine everything upstream.
The ZTL
Nearly every Italian town of any age has a limited traffic zone across its centre, camera-enforced, with permits issued locally. If your address sits inside one, the permit application is the first piece of work rather than the last — weeks out, not days.
The hill town
Gradients, gates and streets laid out for handcarts. Where the vehicle cannot reach the door the answer is a transfer to something small for the final stretch, arranged in advance.
What altitude does to a load
An Alpine crossing takes a trailer through real changes in temperature, humidity and air pressure in a short span. Sealed glazing can stress. Timber moves. Instruments go out of tune and, badly packed, out of true. Certain adhesives in older furniture soften or become brittle.
Not a reason to route around the Alps by default — a reason to identify the susceptible items at survey and pack them for the conditions.
The road
M1 south, the Kent crossings, then the long run through France. From there it forks: the Alpine tunnels for the north, or Provence into Liguria and the A12 past Genoa for Tuscany and below.

Moving to Italy — questions
Alps or coast?
Northern Italy goes over via the Gotthard, Fréjus or Mont Blanc. Tuscany and below usually take the coastal road through Provence into Liguria. The decision is made on destination and season.
What happens in winter?
The Alpine options stop being automatic. Passes close and chain regulations bite, and a loaded vehicle is not the thing to discover that with. We take the longer coastal road rather than gamble.
What is a ZTL?
A limited traffic zone over the historic centre of most Italian towns, camera-enforced. If your address is inside one, delivery needs a permit arranged in advance with the local comune.
Can you deliver into a hill town?
With planning. The answer is a transfer to a small vehicle for the last stretch — the same shuttle we use on the tight Charnwood lanes, just further from home and needing more notice.
What does Italian customs want?
Your codice fiscale, evidence residence is being transferred, and a valued inventory in the format Italian customs expect. They are more particular about presentation than most.
