The old village
Streets laid out around the granite works rather than around vehicles: narrow, stone-walled with no margin either side, and steep in places. Some properties have no off-street parking at all and a couple are reachable only by something smaller than the load ideally wants.
None of that is a problem with a look first. All of it is a problem on a Saturday morning without one — which is why the approach check is part of the survey rather than an optional extra.
The gradient
Worth planning rather than just enduring. A loaded trolley on a slope wants to keep going, the tail lift needs the flattest available ground, and the heavy items go first while everyone is fresh. In frost we move the start time. It is the same discipline any hillside town needs and it is the main thing that separates a Mountsorrel move from a Barrow one.
The newer housing
Later estates on the flatter ground towards the bypass — driveways, turning space, wide doorways. Quick, predictable, and the bulk of the village by volume.
Around here
Rothley, Swithland, Woodhouse Eaves and the forest edge, plus Barrow upon Soar along the valley and Quorn upstream. Whole households are house removals; single rooms are man and van.

Is the hill a factor?
Yes, more than people expect. Mountsorrel climbs off the valley floor and several of the older streets have a real gradient. We park the vehicle facing the sensible way, strap anything on castors, and in frost we will move the start time rather than test it.
What is the granite about?
The village grew around the quarry, and the older housing reflects it — stone walls, tight frontages and streets that were laid out around the works rather than around delivery vehicles. It makes the old core the most constrained part of the village.
Are the newer estates easier?
Considerably. The later housing on the flatter ground has driveways, turning space and wide doorways — among the quickest loading in the Soar valley.
Do you cover Rothley and Swithland?
Yes. Rothley is straightforward with some narrow older streets; Swithland and the forest lanes get the approach checked first, as all the Charnwood lanes do.
